Astronomical observatory - Belogradchik is a division of the Institute of Astronomy (part of the Bugarian Academy of Sciences). It is situated near the small town of Belogradchik (in the north-west part of Bulgaria).

The observatory was built in 1961 by a group of asrtronomy enthusiasts led by Hristo Kostov who was a teacher in physics at the Belogradchik high school. It became the first school observatory in Bulgaria. The biggest telescope at this time was a 15cm Zeiss telescope (Kassegrain). From 1964 to 1974 the observatory was used as a satellite observation base.
In 1965 a new telescope was ordered at the Zeiss factory - 60cm Kassegrain and in August 1969 it was mounted in the 6m dome.
Since 1976 AO Belogradchik has been an observation base of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 1994 the observatory was equipped with one more telescope Celestron - 14inch Schmidt-Kassegrain mounted in the 4m dome.
Currently, two types of observations are made: CCD and photometric.
The coordinates of the observatory are:

  • longitude +1h 30min 12s.
  • latitude +42deg 37' 35"
  • altitude 610m.
