About Us
The seminars in the Astronomical Observatory of Sofia University ensure presentations and discussions in all fields of astronomy and inter-disciplinary domains. Traditionally, such seminars are held accidentally.
In October 2004 a remarkable lecture about the discovery of extremely extended stellar halos of nearby galaxies was given by Sc.Dr. Nikolai Tikhonov, senior researcher in the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian AS. This event provoked two of us (Tsvetan Georgiev and Petko Nedialkov) to try to increase the number of such interesting talks. We decided to invite speakers and to propagate schedule of the seminars. Thus the seminars became almost regular.
Now, five years later we note that 115 seminars, including 3 mini-conferences, with 133 scientific talks, were carried out. In 43 cases the talks are given by students and in 81 cases by scientists. In 9 cases the speakers were businessmen, humanitarians etc. Three seminars devoted to the international day of the humor 1 April were performed too. Typically the audience numbers was 15-20 persons, mainly students, and the duration of the seminar was 40-70 min.
The distribution of the number of the talks according to their topic is as follows: cosmology and black holes – 7, galaxies and quasars – 19, star clusters and associations – 7, stars in Galaxy and in nearby galaxies – 19, Sun and solar eclipses – 16, comets and extra-solar planets – 7, techniques, methods and organizing – 19.
During these five years seven our colleagues gave 3 or more talks in the seminars, as follows: Tanyu Bonev, Galin Borisov, Tsvetan Georgiev, Boris Komitov, Peter Pessev, Evgeni Semkov and Ivanka Stateva.
